If I Were
2026
A5, 3 books, 60 pages each
If I Were is a three-book publication and installation exploring identity, memory, and imagination through the question: If I were something else, what would I be? The project grew from the small, often unconscious ways we recognize ourselves in objects, places, and forms around us.
The three A5 books, If I Were a Tree, If I Were a Cloud, and If I Were a Rollercoaster, each contain 48 to 60 pages and explore identity through different relationships to time and self: being rooted, being transient, and being in motion.
If I Were a Tree grew from years of photographing trees I encountered in daily life and while traveling. As I write about them, my memories of these encounters begin to mix with the lives and memories I imagine the trees might have. If I Were a Cloud comes from my habit of photographing the sky, especially sunsets. I often notice them on my way home after a busy day, when everything finally begins to slow down. If I Were a Rollercoaster comes from rollercoasters that repeatedly appear in my dreams. The book is more experimental, bringing together anxiety, excitement, strange stories, imagined worlds, and different fragments of myself.
